Gertie C. Petteway Edwards
Gertie C. Petteway Edwards was born on December 10, 1933 in Cedar Lake, Matagorda County, TX to Esther Jones and John Petteway. She attended public school at Mable Kennedy School in the Cedar Lane community and graduated in 1953 from O.H. Herman High School in Van Vleck, TX. Gertie C. was very athletic and excelled as a basketball player, winning many championships with her team.
Gertie C. accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Upon moving to the Freeport Community, she became a member of First St. Emanuel Baptist Church where she served faithfully for many years. She exemplified Christ through her many good deeds including taking in the homeless, feeding the hungry, and a mother and listening ear to those who needed encouragement. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit and loving nature, her pure heart of gold, her love of cooking and the love she had for her family.
Her transition from this life to life eternal came Tuesday evening, October 6, 2015, in Galveston, Texas. Loving memories will be cherished by five daughters, Vanessa Petteway Williams (Curt) of La Habra, CA, Rosalind Petteway Waddy (Raymond) of Lake Jackson, TX, Esterline Taylor Young (Dave) of Fresno, TX, Sherry Russaw (Byron Keith) of Freeport, TX and Tracy Jackson-Poteat (Ramas) of Texas City, TX; two sons, Terence “Spudnick” Jackson of Houston, TX and Milford Ray Jackson (Debra) of Freeport, TX; and three step-daughters, Cheryl Chambers of Spring, TX, Jacquelyn Hawkins (Albert) of Austin, TX and Jacquelyn Robinson (Arnold) of Angleton, TX.
She will forever be in the hearts of her family, including one devoted brother, Johnnie Sidney, Sr. (Mary Jane) of Bay City, TX; one loving sister-in-law, Irma Jean Sidney, of Van Vleck, TX; nineteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; one grand godson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends along with countless other friends and family whom were blessed to know her, including special friends, Thelma Earls, Ernestine Warren, Doris Powell, Nancy Harmon and Viola Parsons. Gertie C. was preceded in death by a son, Derry Jackson; stepfather and mother, E.J. and Esther Boston; father, John Petteway; brother, Leroy Sidney; and grandson, Brandon Dishon Petteway.
