The Life & Legacy of Nell Virginia Horton Dawson
Nell Virginia Horton was born on June 23 in Hallettsville, TX to Hager & Roy Horton, Sr. Nell was raised & educated in Wharton, Tx and as a young adult she would move to Texas City, Tx where she married the love of her life, Tommie Lee Dawson where they raised their 3 children Joyce, Mark, & Tommy.
Nell was employed at Galveston County Mainland Center Hospital (Radiology Dept.) retiring after 25 yrs. of service. She was a lifelong member of Barbour’s Chapel Baptist Church until she was no longer able to attend.
Nell had a zest for life and loved her family & friends to the fullest. She enjoyed cooking, traveling & collecting rocks on the way for her rock garden, helping decorate their home on holidays, going to the horse track in Louisiana, playing cards, dancing & music.
Nell was a stylish dresser, a member of the Ladies of Distinction Social Club, and enjoyed motorcycles as she & Tommie Lee were associates of the Magnificent 7 Motorcycle Club.
Nell Dawson, affectionately known as MeMe was many things to many people: a loving daughter, devoted wife, loving mother, a doting grandmother, great & great great grandmother, a loyal sister, a wise aunt, a caring relative and a cherished friend. GOD sent his angel to receive her soul on April 23,2021. Those left to cherish her memory are her siblings Jacquelyn Ford (Abram) of Missouri City, Carolyn Taylor (Will), Rita O’Neal, & David Horton all of Texas City. Her children Joyce Winston (Gene), Mark Dawson and Tommy Dawson. Grandchildren- La Donna Collins (Kirk), Sheronda Brow (Elliott), Tracie Steans (Carrick), Tomeka Washington (Larry) Nicole Megress, Bryan Winston & Crystal Cohen (Gerard). 17 Great Grands: Jordan Hunt, Jeremy Hunt, Christina Ross, Ki ‘Asia Pham, Tillissia Wimbley, Brianna Ross, Kirk Collins, Jr, Elliott Brow, Jr, Errionn Brow, Darrenton Wimbley, Daeshawn Wimbley, Tyelan Pham, Brandon Pham, Obare Atuya, Andre Haynes, Jr. Omari Atuya & Sophie Atuya. 2 Great Great Grands- Ayana Smith & Adrion Smith, Jr. Loving nephews & nieces- Leonard & Larry Brooks, Harvey Benoit, Olivia Benoit, Sharon Robinson, Dawn Madrey, Barbara Baines, Alma Allen, Michelle Dawson, Karen Austin, Larry Don Simmons, Preston Dawson, along with numerous family & friends.
Preceded in death by her parents, loving & devoted husband Tommie Lee Dawson, infant son Tommie, Jr- sisters Joan Barr, Lottie Marsh, Lois Horton, Rose Benoit, & brother Roy Horton, Jr. granddaughter Duawnna (DeeDee) Dawson, grandson Marcus Dawson & great granddaughter Serena Collins.
Special Thanks to her loving & devoted children (Tommy, Mark, Joyce) & granddaughter La Donna who ensured her daily needs to the utmost, granddaughter Sheronda, niece Olivia, loving care takers Sheila Smith, Zena Johnson, Denise Stinson & Annette Moore.
There will be a public visitation held on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 10am with a chapel service to begin at 11am. Services will be held at Bay Area Funeral Directors located at 5410 FM 1765 Texas City, Texas 77591. Burial to follow at Mainland Memorial Cemetery.
